Tooth Extraction

What is a Tooth Extraction?

Extractions involve removing one or more of your natural teeth. We do everything possible to save a tooth from being extracted. However, there may come a point when a tooth is too damaged for other treatments. In other cases, a tooth poses a risk to your oral health, and it is best to remove the tooth before it becomes a problem.

Why is a Tooth Extraction Needed?

Extractions are needed for a variety of different reasons. If there is a way to save the tooth, we’ll recommend and advise you to try these options before fully removing the tooth. Once removed, there may be issues with bone loss as well as shifting of surrounding teeth. Some reasons you’d benefit from an extraction include:

  • Your child has a stubborn baby tooth
  • A tooth has become too severely decayed
  • A tooth is loose because of gum disease
  • You have a tooth that’s cracked or broken below the gum line
  • You have an impacted wisdom tooth
  • You want to avoid the expense and inconvenience of other treatments
Who Needs Extraction?

Who is a Candidate?

With an examination, we will determine if an extraction is needed, and if so, the best way to go about removing the tooth. X-rays will allow us to see underneath the surface of the tooth and gum line, which helps in creating a special treatment plan just for you. Most people who need an extraction can benefit from the procedure. If a tooth needs to be removed, it’s better to have the work done sooner rather than later.

Process

What happens During an Extraction?

We first numb the area , and then use special tools to loosen and remove the tooth. We may place sutures (stitches) if they are needed, but this isn’t always necessary. We have you bite down on gauze or cotton to stop all bleeding. You will be given a care sheet that provides you with information on keeping the surgical site clean while it is healing.

If you think you might need to have a tooth removed, call our office and we will be happy to answer any and all of your questions.
