A typical dental examination will sometimes not allow us to detect and locate every problem. Whether you have impacted wisdom teeth, or a child who has their permanent teeth coming in, x-rays can give us an idea of what’s going on below the surface of the gums. They can even detect infections, abscesses, bone loss, and cavities without the need for a physical examination of the mouth. X-rays are a critical part of maintaining your oral health and treating any problems found.

What Are Dental X-Rays?
A dental x-ray is an image that allows us to see underneath the surface of your teeth and gums. In some cases, there are conditions that can only be detected with an x-ray. We use safe and reliable x-ray technology, that uses a minimal amount of radiation, to create a high-definition image. These images can be safely taken on all members of your family.

When Will Dental X-Rays Be Taken?
You can expect x-rays to be taken at the majority of your appointments in our office. They are safe to have taken, and we’ll often recommend them for patients of all ages. Some of the different reasons you’d need x-rays include:
- Checkup appointments
- Before oral surgery
- During emergency appointments
- Before or during a root canal
- When detected levels of bone loss

What Happens When Dental X-Rays Are Taken?
We first drape a lead apron over your entire body. This apron helps to protect you against radiation bouncing within the room. A tiny device is then placed inside the mouth, and the actual x-ray machine is angled at this device. The x-ray is taken, and the device moved to a different area of the mouth. This process will be repeated until all of the x-rays needed are taken. You will typically need to have x-rays taken at the majority of your appointments as they tell us things a typical exam cannot find.
