For larger cavities, amalgam may be your only choice due to the fact that it’s stronger. However, no dental decision should be made without consulting a trained dental professional.

What is an Amalgam Filling?
Amalgam, or the traditional silver filling, is the strongest option available. It’s also the most durable, and will last through much more wear and tear than will the composite resin material. Amalgam is also the least expensive option, so if you’re on a budget, this might be the right choice for you.

Composite Resin Dental Fillings
Composite resin dental fillings, on the other hand, are still very durable. For cavities ranging from small- to medium-size, composite resin offers a long-lasting filling that may be more attractive than the silver amalgam filling, particularly if your filling is on a more visible area of the tooth. However, composite resin does cost a bit more than amalgam.
Composite resin dental fillings use ionomers, which take on the natural color of your tooth. These are used to fill cavities that are more easily seen, such as those along the gum line.
