Dental Fillings

Dental Fillings

No matter how well you take care of your teeth, chances are good that at some point in your life you’ll have a cavity that needs fixing. Having a cavity that needs filling is no reason to be upset as long gone are the days when that meant getting ugly dental fillings. Today, modern dentistry can offer you many alternatives for dental fillings that combine the lasting and permanent strength you need with the aesthetically pleasing look you desire.

If your cavity is located in a less visible area of your mouth – usually the surfaces you use to chew – you can typically choose between the traditional silver-toned material, called amalgam, and the composite material, which is a resin that is tinted to match your tooth color. Both dental fillings have benefits and drawbacks, so the option that’s right for you depends entirely upon the cavity itself, and what you personally want from your dental work.

Amalgam Or Composite?

Deciding which filling option is right for you is a serious decision and shouldn’t be made lightly. While both amalgam and composite resin offer you long-lasting hold, you need to decide how important the aesthetics of your filling are to you, and whether or not the look of composite resin is worth the cost. For larger cavities, amalgam may be your only choice due to the fact that it’s stronger. However, no dental decision should be made without consulting a trained dental professional.

Amalgam Filling

What is an Amalgam Filling?

Amalgam, or the traditional silver filling, is the strongest option available. It’s also the most durable, and will last through much more wear and tear than will the composite resin material. Amalgam is also the least expensive option, so if you’re on a budget, this might be the right choice for you.

Composite Resin

Composite Resin Dental Fillings

Composite resin dental fillings, on the other hand, are still very durable. For cavities ranging from small- to medium-size, composite resin offers a long-lasting filling that may be more attractive than the silver amalgam filling, particularly if your filling is on a more visible area of the tooth. However, composite resin does cost a bit more than amalgam.

Composite resin dental fillings use ionomers, which take on the natural color of your tooth. These are used to fill cavities that are more easily seen, such as those along the gum line.
